Summary

AI National Election Insights is an AI-powered civic technology project designed to turn citizen election reports and election information from across Nigeria into an organized, searchable and continuously developing digital record.

The project creates a digital profile for every polling unit, allowing information gathered during elections to be connected to specific locations, incidents and time periods. Through PollWatch on the Kaci Help App, citizens can submit reports using text, photos, videos, voice and location information. Artificial intelligence then helps organize and classify this information, making large volumes of election reports easier to understand and explore.

Rather than allowing valuable election information to remain scattered across individual reports, social media posts, polling units and different organizations, the project brings relevant information together into structured election records. Human review and verification can then help distinguish reported information from verified findings.

The long-term goal is to build a persistent digital election record for Nigeria that can support transparency, research, journalism, civic organizations, election monitoring and future elections.

How it works

During an election, citizens can use PollWatch on the Kaci Help App to submit reports from polling units and surrounding communities. Reports may contain written descriptions, photographs, videos, voice recordings and other relevant information, depending on what the citizen observes.

AI technology helps process the growing volume of information by organizing reports, classifying incidents and identifying relationships between reports. Instead of treating every report as an isolated piece of information, the system can connect reports to their relevant polling units, locations, timestamps and related incidents.

The platform can also identify patterns, trends and emerging hotspots by analyzing information across multiple polling units. A time-based record can show how incidents develop throughout election day, while related reports can be connected to provide greater context.

Importantly, AI-generated classifications are not intended to automatically become verified findings. Human review and appropriate verification processes remain important before information is presented as confirmed. Privacy safeguards are also applied to help protect citizens and sensitive information contained in election reports.

Over time, these structured records create an evolving digital history of what was reported, where it happened, when it happened and how different reports may relate to one another.

Why we chose it

Nigeria’s elections generate enormous amounts of information, but much of that information can become fragmented between individual citizens, polling units, journalists, civic organizations and other monitoring efforts. Valuable reports may be difficult to find later, difficult to compare across locations, or disconnected from other information that could provide important context.

We chose this project because better organized election information can strengthen transparency and public understanding. By creating a digital record for every polling unit, AI National Election Insights can help preserve information that might otherwise disappear after election day.

The project can support journalists investigating election incidents, researchers studying electoral patterns, civic organizations monitoring elections and communities seeking a clearer understanding of what happened at their polling units. It can also provide a structured foundation for comparing election information across different elections and identifying recurring patterns.

Most importantly, the project is designed to move beyond simply collecting reports. It aims to turn reports into usable knowledge while maintaining a clear distinction between citizen submissions, AI-assisted analysis and verified findings.

The Location
