Traveling should be a simple act, leaving one place and arriving at another safely. But for many of us in Nigeria and across Africa, each journey carries with it a silent question: Will I make it there safely? Every day, we hear heartbreaking stories of kidnappings, “one chance” buses, robbery attacks, and people who leave their homes never to be seen again. I have seen it, I have read about it, and I have felt the fear myself.
This is the reality that inspired me to design the TravelSafe feature on Kaci Help. I wanted a way for people to move around without feeling like they are on their own. I wanted a system where families and friends could breathe easier knowing that their loved one is being digitally watched over, not by strangers, but by their own trusted guardians.
TravelSafe is not just about tracking. It is about peace of mind. And in this article, I’ll walk you through why I built it, how it works, and why I believe it can turn every journey into a safer story.
Why TravelSafe Matters to Me
I have always been bothered by the way people disappear while going about ordinary daily activities. One story that never leaves my mind is that of a young lady in Lagos who boarded a bus and never returned home. She was killed, and her family found out too late. That incident shook me. It wasn’t an isolated case either, there are countless similar stories in Nigeria.
We live in a world where movements are unpredictable. Young people, especially Gen Z, love their independence and may not always want to share every detail of their movements with their parents or family. I understand that. I too don’t want to broadcast my day-to-day steps. But the truth is, safety should not be compromised in the name of privacy.
That’s where the TravelSafe feature comes in. It creates a middle ground: your family doesn’t have to know everywhere you are going, but if something goes wrong, they will be the first to know and they will have the right information to act fast.
How TravelSafe Works
The process begins the same way as with the Emergency feature. A user signs up with their active phone number, verifies via WhatsApp, SMS, or Email, and completes their profile with accurate details, including uploading a profile picture and adding trusted Guardians. The app then generates a Kaci Security Number (KSN) which is unique to each user.
But the beauty of TravelSafe begins when a journey is about to start.
Here’s the step-by-step flow:
-
Starting Point
-
The user enters “Where is the place of boarding?”
-
They can type in the address or simply tick “Use my current location” for automatic detection.
-
-
Destination
-
The next page asks, “Where is the place of destination?”
-
Users type in where they are going. If the journey has multiple stops, they can list all of them.
(Note: You can only use “current location” once because you can’t physically be in two places at the same time.)
-
-
Travel Mode
-
The user enters how they are traveling: taxi, bus, private car, or even walking.
-
This information matters because it tells guardians what to expect.
-
-
Travel Details
-
Users can add descriptions of their trip or daily routine for record purposes.
-
-
Estimated Duration
-
This is one of the most important steps. The user adds how long the trip should take. For example, if I leave home at 8 am and should be back by 5:30 pm, I can enter “09 for hours 30 for minutes.”
-
-
Additional Info
-
An optional space for users to add any comments.
-
-
File Attachment
-
This page allows uploads of pictures, videos, files, or even real-time camera captures before activating the trip.
-
Finally, the user taps Check-In. A confirmation popup appears, and once active, the journey is officially tracked.
Adding Media: Before and After Boarding
To make TravelSafe more powerful, I designed it with flexibility. Media can be added in two ways:
-
Before Activation
-
For example, if you’re about to board a taxi, you can first activate TravelSafe, then take a picture of the taxi’s plate number and upload it.
-
-
After Activation
-
Let’s say you activated TravelSafe from home, but you’re only boarding a taxi later. You can then go to the live chat of your active trip and upload the plate number photo, video, or even a quick voice note.
-
This live chat feature also supports sending images, videos, and voice recordings. It requires a subscription, but it is one of the most powerful ways to stay connected while on the move.
Guardians and Notifications
The real magic happens if something goes wrong. While the trip is active, users are encouraged to keep the app open because Kaci does not track location in the background for privacy reasons. Instead, it updates location while the app is in use.
If the estimated trip time runs out and the user has not checked out, the following happens:
-
Kaci first sends a reminder message to the user on the activity page.
-
If after 5 minutes there is no response, Kaci automatically sends a “Check on Your Dependent” notification to the guardians.
This notification arrives via WhatsApp, SMS, and Email and includes a link with all the details the user provided. Again, guardians don’t need to be on Kaci to receive this.
This simple design ensures that no matter what, someone always knows when a loved one is overdue.
Real-Life Scenarios Where TravelSafe Can Save Lives
-
One Chance Buses: The notorious “one chance” kidnappings in Nigeria often happen when unsuspecting passengers board commercial vehicles. With TravelSafe, users can capture the plate number before boarding. If something goes wrong, guardians have direct evidence to trace.
-
Late-Night Travel: Students, workers, or businesspeople traveling late can activate the feature so guardians are automatically notified if they don’t return on time.
-
Daily Routines: Even ordinary routines like going to school or work can be tracked. Guardians can relax knowing there is a system in place.
-
Meet-Ups With Strangers: In today’s digital world, people meet online and arrange physical meet-ups. TravelSafe adds a safety net to these often-risky encounters.
My Meeting With Nigerian Authorities
In 2024, I had the chance to demonstrate this feature to the Nigerian Police ICT team, the National Security Adviser’s office, and the DSS. Their reaction was the same: they were impressed, almost overwhelmed. They saw the potential.
But then came the question that exposed the biggest challenge: “How will this make money for us?”
I was not surprised. Our security agencies often face funding and logistics challenges. I’ve had real-life experiences where people call the police, and officers genuinely want to help but cannot because they don’t even have fuel for their patrol vehicles.
That was the moment I decided Kaci could not depend on state authorities alone. Guardians had to come first. Because when something happens, your family and friends are the ones who care most about you. They will push further to get authorities involved.
Limitations: What Kaci Is and Isn’t
I always emphasize this because I want people to trust Kaci for what it is, not for what it isn’t.
-
Kaci does not provide police, medical, or crisis response.
-
It is not a professional emergency service.
-
What it does is connect you with your guardians and partners instantly when something is wrong.
That’s why we have disclaimers across the app and website: if you need immediate help, contact emergency services. Kaci is your connector, not your rescuer.
My Vision for TravelSafe
When I imagine the future, I see a Nigeria where families no longer panic endlessly when someone is delayed. I see a system where a simple alert can save lives, prevent crimes, and solve missing person cases faster.
If TravelSafe can help reduce just one percent of missing or unsafe travel cases, I will consider it a success. Because sometimes, one saved life is more powerful than a hundred success stories.
Conclusion
For me, TravelSafe is more than an app feature. It is a response to real pain in society. I built it because I do not want to see another mother cry because her child didn’t come back from school. I built it because I do not want another father wandering from hospital to hospital looking for his missing son.
TravelSafe is my way of saying: You don’t have to journey alone. Someone is watching out for you, even if silently. Someone will know if things go wrong. And sometimes, knowing that is enough to give both the traveler and their family peace of mind.
Every journey deserves to end with a safe arrival. That is the story I want Kaci’s TravelSafe to keep telling, one trip at a time.
